TikTok food trends are back with viral frozen bears.
People love toothy bears. People love crunchy things. Why not crunchy bears? All you need is time and two ingredients: Sprites and gummy bears. Once frozen, they are a combination of firm and soft with a frozen candy texture. They’re kind of fun and quirky and I think they’re adorable because the gummy bears are twice the size.
What are frozen bears?
Just what they sound like! Gummy bears that are frozen. They appeared on my TikTok page for you, so I’m not sure who invented them because I’ve seen literally hundreds of people make and print them for AMSR print videos. They don’t really sound crunchy thoughts – they’re more of an icy chew. Anyway, they looked fun and cute and the sweet bears are delicious.
What do frozen bears taste like?
They taste just like regular bears, but with a different texture. Fresh and cool and smooth. Kind of hard and soft at the same time. If you’ve ever eaten gummies that have been left out in the cold, the texture is somewhat similar, but slightly softer due to the absorption of the Sprite. They are both chewier and softer. You’d think they’d be hard, but they don’t come out like ice cubes, more like a soft, cold crunch, like chipped ice. Because of the sugar and gelatin content of the bears, they stay somewhat soft, which is nice because it’s what gives the bears their soft, icy texture. As you chew, the frozen bears begin to melt in your mouth. I like them!
How to make frozen bears
- dine your gummy bears in a shallow container that has a lid. You can do them in neat little rows or just spread them out, as long as they’re in one layer you’re good.
- shed Sprite (or your choice of soda) over the bears, making sure they are completely submerged. Cover the container and refrigerate overnight.
- The next day your bears will double in size. Drain and arrange them in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with baking paper. Freeze for 3 hours or until firm and frozen.
- Enjoy frozen tire squeal!
Frozen bear ingredients:
- gummy bears – Everyone knows that the best bears are Haribo. I dream of going to Germany to visit a Hairbo factory one day. My favorites are the twin cherries. Anyway, any bear will do, buy your favorite tires.
- Sprite – You don’t need to use Sprite of course, any plain soda will work, so pick your favorite. I think maybe the frozen gummy bear trend came from Japan and they originally used Mitsuya Cider, which is kind of a citrus-y cream soda.
What other tires can I freeze?
Any really! I’ve seen frozen peach rings, coke bottles, sour babies. This will work on any kind of chewy, soft and delicious candy.
What other carbonated drinks can I use?
Again, any soda will work for this. The soda is for the carbonation and juice soaked in the toothpicks, so choose a soda that you like. I’m pretty sure the top choice is Sprite/7Up because they are clear so the tooth bears stay the same color.
The best brands of gummy bears
Personally, I like Haribo Gold Bears, which is what we used in this post. Haribo invented gummy bears in 1922 and they are the original and the best! They are a bit firmer than most gummy bears and I think they have the most delicious taste and chew. I also love how pretty and pastel they turn out after freezing. Mike is partial to Albanian Fruit Bears https://amzn.to/3C9gy4h who are also very good. They are a little softer than the golden bears, which is not for me, but I admit they are very soft and chewy and have elite flavors like Fuji Apple, Asian Pear and Alphonso Mango.
Another bear I’m interested in trying but can’t vouch for is the Black Forest gummy bears https://amzn.to/3YB9uVA . They have a different bear shape that would be fun to see frozen. I hear they taste really good and are a good amount of chew.
That’s it! This is a fun quick treatment – if you ignore overnight soaking and freezing – and I think it’s worth a try. The holiday season is upon us, and a bowl of seasonally colored frozen bears is a delightful conversation starter.
Happy Freezing!
